Silk was discovered in 2640 BC by the third wife of China's emperor.

As she was peacefully sipping tea beneath the shady canopy of a mulberry tree in the imperial garden, a tiny cocoon unexpectedly tumbled from the branches and landed gracefully in her cup of tea.

To her amazement, she witnessed the cocoon gradually unraveling, revealing a long, intricate thread of remarkable delicacy.

Fascinated by the unique properties and inherent strength of this fibre, she diligently gathered countless cocoons and skillfully wove their fibres into a robe for the Emperor.

 

Silk was valued by people all over the world, it was also used as currency. China started trading silk outside of Asia through an Asian network and of trade routes known as the silk road.
 In 202 BC, the Silk Road was opened, an ancient trade route, connected the two major civilizations of China and Rome. The word silk took about a thousand years to travel from China through Central Asia to Northern Europe.
